Kohler Co. Championship Golf Courses Honored in Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses
Both Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run continue to score well on prestigious ranking
KOHLER, Wis. – January 17, 2013 – Kohler Co. is proud to announce Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run Championship courses have been featured in Golf Digest 100 Greatest Rankings, with the Straits course at Whistling Straits leading the way, ranking #2 in 100 Greatest Public Golf courses. Both are part of the Kohler Co.-owned, Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five-Diamond The American Club resort in Kohler, Wisconsin. One of only 36 worldwide with these designations, the hotel offers unparalleled golfing and hospitality experiences.
“We are pleased and honored that all four of our courses continue to rank within the top 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses. To be praised amongst the best in America is a true reflection of the first-class experience we offer golfers,” said Jim Richerson, General Manager and Group Director of Golf. “With the 2015 PGA Championship and 2020 Ryder Cup on the near horizon, we look forward to continuing Kohler Co.’s legacy of Championship golf for years to come.”
All fours courses are included in the 100 Greatest Public Golf courses.
- Whistling Straits (Straits) #2
- Blackwolf Run (River) #14
- Whistling Straits (Irish) #39
- Blackwolf Run (Meadow Valleys) #62
Furthermore, the Straits and River courses both moved up positions in America’s 100 Greatest Golf courses, ranking #16 and #63, respectively. In addition, all four courses ranked highly in the Best in State with the Straits #1, River #4, Irish #5 and Meadow Valleys #6. Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run have collectively hosted the 1998 and 2012 U.S. Women’s Open, 2004 and 2010 PGA Championships and 2007 U.S. Senior Open.
Established in 1966, America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses is the game’s oldest ranking. The Straits course at Whistling Straits has been ranked on America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses for 14 years. The River course at Blackwolf Run has been ranked for 22 years and according to Golf Digest, “possesses some of (Pete) Dye's most exciting holes.”
In order to construct the prominent list, an expert group of panelists play and score courses on seven criteria including: shot values, resistance to scoring, design variety, memorability, aesthetics, conditioning and ambience. To arrive at a course's final score, its averages are totaled in the seven categories, double-weighting shot values. A course needs 45 evaluations over the past eight years to be eligible for America's 100 Greatest, and minimum 25 ballots for 100 Greatest Public Courses.
