River Wildlife's 500-acre wilderness preserve is maintained in a natural state to preserve native vegetation and wildlife. 18 miles of woodland trails and five miles of the meandering Sheboygan River provide abundant opportunities for members and guests staying at The American Club® or Inn on Woodlake to enjoy the great outdoors.

Self-Guided River Fishing
Some of the best fishing in the state is available in the fall and spring as trout and salmon make their way upstream on the Sheboygan River. Anglers must provide their own fishing gear and applicable licenses. Lodging reservations at The American Club or Inn on Woodlake are required for nonmembers as well as the purchase of an entry pass for access to the river.

Trapshooting (Year-round)
On-your-command targets hurtle away at 45-degree angles and varying heights, offering valuable warm–up before a pheasant hunt or providing novice/beginners with a great opportunity to learn basic shooting skills. Trapshooting can also be a fun, competitive activity for larger groups. Reservations available daily 8am–3pm. Lodging reservations at The American Club or Inn on Woodlake are required for nonmembers prior to making reservations for trapshooting.

5-Stand Shooting (Year-round)
A compact 5-stand course provides an invigorating workout for the experienced shooter. Each station simulates different wild game as it’s being flushed: “running rabbit,” “springing teal,” etc. Reservations available daily from 8am–3pm. Lodging reservations at The American Club or Inn on Woodlake are required for nonmembers prior to making reservations for 5-stand shooting.

3-D Archery Range (Year-round)
Sharpen your archery skills at our archery walk in the wooded area behind our trap range. Stationary targets (deer, turkey and bear) are included; however, you will need to provide your own equipment. Reservations available daily 8am–3pm. Lodging reservations at The American Club or Inn on Woodlake are required for nonmembers as well as the purchase of an entry pass for access to the archery range.

Four rustic, wilderness campsites have been established along the trails for picnics or overnight use. Members-only amenity.

Tomczyk Cabin (Year-round)
This secluded, rustic (void of indoor plumbing, electricity and water!) historical log cabin with wood-burning sauna and old-fashioned cook stove is located next to a pond and sleeps up to six people. It can be reached only by a half mile or more of hiking or cross-country skiing – perfect for a weekend away from it all. Members-only amenity.

Self-Guided Birder's Hike (April–August)
Enjoy a one-mile, self-guided hike along the meandering Sheboygan River. Bird identification field guide and binoculars are provided, and a picnic lunch can be arranged by advance reservation. Reservations available daily 8am–3pm. Lodging reservations at The American Club or Inn on Woodlake are required for nonmembers as well as the purchase of an entry pass for access to the hike.

Canoeing/Kayaking (May–September)
Enjoy an exhilarating adventure paddling down five miles of the rambling Sheboygan River in one of our canoes or single-person kayaks. River Wildlife personnel will transport you upstream to the launch site to start your journey. This invigorating trip takes about 2½ hours, includes portaging around two dams, and requires average physical stamina. Reservations are available daily 8am–1:30pm. Lodging reservations at The American Club or Inn on Woodlake are required for nonmembers prior to making reservations for canoeing or kayaking.

Horseback Riding (May–October)
Explore the natural beauty of River Wildlife’s woodlands, meadows and valleys on one of our well-trained western pleasure horses. Our expert guide will escort you on a 1-hour trail ride that will linger in your memory for seasons to come. Experience is not required; minimum age is 12. Reservations are available daily at 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Lodging reservations at The American Club or Inn on Woodlake are required for nonmembers prior to making reservations for horseback riding.

Youth Archery Shooting (May–October)
This is target practice like you remember from summer camp. Youth-sized, recurve bows are provided along with paper “bullseye” targets. A mesh backdrop keeps the arrows from wandering out of recovery range. Recommended for ages 8 and above accompanied by an adult. Reservations available daily 8am–3pm. Lodging reservations at The American Club or Inn on Woodlake are required for nonmembers prior to making reservations for youth archery.

Upland Bird Hunting (Mid-September–Early Spring)
One of the Midwest’s premier shooting clubs offers upland bird hunting in a variety of terrains. Our three hunt fields are planted with native prairie grasses and annual cover crops. Since they are situated along the river and woods, they provide a challenging workout for both hunters and their dogs. Expert guides, dogs and equipment are available. Reservations are available daily at 9am and 1pm. Lodging reservations at The American Club or Inn on Woodlake are required for nonmembers as well as the purchase of a hunting pass prior to making reservations.

Self-Guided Cross-Country Skiing (Weather-permitting)
Winter is truly a special time at River Wildlife, as the snow-covered landscape provides a pristine backdrop for invigorating outdoor adventures. Head off on more than 18 miles of groomed ski trails winding through wooded vistas and rolling meadows. Lodging reservations at The American Club or Inn on Woodlake are required for nonmembers as well as the purchase of an entry pass for access to the trail system. Rental equipment is available at The American Club for a nominal fee; limited availability.
